How Much Do You Know About Your Hairbrush?

A hairbrush isn’t something that most people give a lot of thought to, but you should. In your quest for the perfect hairstyle, you need to take everything into account, right down to the brush you’re using. If you don’t have the right one for your hair type or the hairstyle you’re trying to create, you won’t get the results you’re looking for. Read on to get to know your hairbrush and learn if it’s the right one for you.

Boar Bristles

Natural boar bristles are soft and gentle on hair to minimize breakage. They help to distribute natural oils evenly along the hair shaft to help combat dryness. Boar bristles are a good choice to get a smooth shiny blowout on coarse thick hair. They also do a great job of separating hair to create lift and volume in fine limp hair.

Synthetic Bristles

Synthetic brushes are usually made from nylon or plastic. These brushes don’t create as much static as natural bristles can and slide easily through the hair to make detangling a lot easier. For this reason, they are often a favorite of those with thick, coarse, or curly hair.

Combination Bristles

With a combination bristle brush, you get the best of both worlds. You get the smooth sheen from the natural bristles and easy detangling of synthetic bristles. These are a good all-purpose brush but are especially well suited for those with long hair that’s fine to normal.

The Right Tool for the Job

The shape and style of the brush depends on the job you want it to do. For blow-drying choose a vented brush to speed drying time. If you’re going for volume and a bit of curl, grab a large round brush. If you’re going for smooth and sleek, opt for a fine bristle paddle brush. To get a more natural-looking air-dried result, reach for a wider bristle cushion brush. And if your hair is super curly, you may want to ditch the brush altogether and get a wide-toothed comb instead. You’ll get a much better curl definition and less frizz.
