How To Deal With Grown Out Roots

How to Deal with Grown Out Roots

If it’s been a while since you’ve been to the salon and your roots are starting to show, it may be tempting to grab an at-home kit. Just take a deep breath and step away from the box. Matching your existing color to a drugstore color kit is next to impossible. The colors on the box almost never match the end result. And mixing the wrong colors can have a disastrous effect. Instead try one of these tricks for dealing with grown-out roots until you can get an appointment with your stylist to get a touchup.

Dry Shampoo for Dark Roots

If you’re not a natural blonde, the good news is that the rooted look is in. But if that’s not your thing you can help lighten your dark roots with a light application of dry shampoo powder. Apply only to the roots and distribute them evenly. Don’t apply too much or it will be quite obvious. If you don’t have dry shampoo on hand, a light dusting of baby powder can also work.

Spray Those Roots Away

A root concealer spray is another quick and easy temporary fix. They are available in many shades, so you're sure to find one to match fairly well. Just spray it on and it will conceal those roots until you wash it out.

Make Some Waves

Adding some texture to your hair can help draw the eye away from the roots. Use a salt spray on damp hair and scrunch as it air dries to create beachy waves. The added waves will draw attention away from dark roots making them less noticeable.

Change Your Part

Whichever trick you try, make it more effective by changing your part. Your hair flattens out at the root when you part it the same way all the time. This makes more surface area visible. Changing your part will add volume and lift at the roots to help conceal the new growth

Conceal the Hairline with a Headband or Scarf

If you’re trying to wear your hair up, the roots at the hairline will be visible no matter what you do, unless you hide them. Use a wide headband or a pretty scarf to conceal those roots and give your style a finished look.
