How To Build the Perfect Skincare Routine
We all love the look we get when our makeup is flawless – a smooth, natural look that complements our best features. The best way to get perfect makeup is with a professional makeup application, but even our everyday makeup routine can look better if we start with great skin. That’s why a customized daily skincare routine is so important, because taking care of your skin pays off – it helps you look your best every day. Here are some tips from the pros of building a skincare routine that works for you.
Skin type. The first step is identifying your skin type. The easiest way to do this is to ask your esthetician, but you can also take some steps to determine this yourself. You probably already know if your skin is dry or oily. Dry skin is flaky and feels dry, while oily skin is always shiny and may feel greasy. Other options are combination skin, which has both dry and oily areas; sensitive skin, which reacts to some ingredients in skincare products; and normal skin, which is balanced and is neither dry nor oily. Once you’ve determined your skin type, this will be your focus when buying products to customize your skincare routine.
Cleanser. The first step is always cleansing. Do this morning and night – at night to remove the day’s makeup, and in the morning to clear off debris that accumulated overnight. For dry skin, you’ll need an alcohol-free product; for oily skin, you’ll need an oil-free product. For other types, check labels to ensure that each product will work for your skin type.
Toner. Many women skip the toner, but this is an important step to keep things balanced. Toners hydrate, replenish, and rebalance your skin’s pH. Do this morning and night after cleansing, and again, choose a product for your skin type.
Exfoliate. Exfoliate your skin a few times a week to clean out your pores and prevent blemishes. Exfoliation also helps your skincare products absorb better to work optimally.
Serums and treatments. Here’s where you really customize your routine by choosing products that address or prevent issues of concern to you. These might be anti-acne treatments, hydrating serums, nourishing serums that infuse antioxidants, or anti-aging treatments. The frequency varies for each serum or treatment, so follow directions on the products or from your esthetician to determine how often you need to use them.
Moisturizer. This is your last step in your skincare routine, just before applying makeup in the morning or before you go to bed. Everyone needs to hydrate their skin, even people with oily skin types – it’s just a matter of selecting the right product that works for your skin. Be sure that the product you use in the morning has sunscreen since even cloudy skies and winter weather can let the sun’s harmful UV rays through. Sun damage can cause your skin to age prematurely, so prevention is key.
